Ode to a Tree.
composed in Autumn 1993

A tree, in all it's majesty, spoke to my heart this day
And told a story, true of life, in such a simple way.
With arms outstretched, to catch the breeze,
With movement in each leaf,
It ran it's fingers through my hair, as I sat underneath.

Each spring, it felt the warmth return, and life flow through its veins
Then every leaf, did burst its bud, to drink upon the rains.
The warming sun brought new found strength
From tip down to its toes.
It stretched its feet in Nature's earth ,in this true way it grows.

The summer brought its majesty, its crown grew tall and strong,
And in the breeze, that drifted by, its branches sang a song.
A song which captured passing birds
To join the serenade
They nestled in its arms so high, no need to feel afraid.

It called to man and beast this way, it shaded heat and light,
And gave a graceful canopy, to shelter all at night.
So long had this tree stood right here
For all the world to see.
How many people sat beneath, and thought it just a tree.

I sat and learned, just how this tree, could teach us all of life,
And how, when all its glory fell with autumns bitter knife,
It closed its eyes, for just a while
And turned at last to sleep,
Until the warmth of spring returned, with new life there to reap.

Its coat had gone, its colour paled, as winter dried its face,
But never in the way we feel, had this tree lost its grace.
For with the sun, and morning rain
This tree will wake again,
And feed once more from mother earth, and drink upon her rain.

We too must realise a time, we need to take our rest,
For, like this tree, there will be times, we cannott reach our best.
But patience is a virtue,
And we shall grow again,
To stand once more upon the earth, of this I'm truly sure.

My lesson was a simple one for me to understand,
How strength and courage can prevail, and grow within the land.
No matter what the tragedy
The trouble or the strife.
Take heart, take heed, the trees do speak, and teach the way of life.
